Season 2 Episode 6 – The Mexican Staring Frog of Southern Sri Lanka
Season 2 Episode 6 – The Mexican
Staring Frog of Southern Sri Lanka
South Park gets caught up in the TV ratings war of the century!
Original Airdate
10th June 1998
Synopsis
Jimbo and Ned are convinced the Mexican
Staring Frog of Southern Sri Lanka is real, and their TV show soars in the
ratings, while rival show Jesus and Pals is struggling. And there’s a bit about
the Vietnam War too, involving roller coasters and log rides.
Kenny's Death
Ripped in two during the Jerry
Springer-esque riot at Jesus and Pals.
My Thoughts Back Then
As
I’ve mentioned earlier, Jimbo and Ned were early favourite South Park
characters of mine when I first watched these in late 2004, at age 13. This episode,
being like a spiritual sequel to Season 1’s Volcano in some ways, was another
early favourite of mine, and one I rewatched when I got Season 2 on DVD the
following April, not long after I turned 14. I knew what the Vietnam War was
too when I first saw this, and at the time strongly supported the Iraq War.
My Thoughts Now
Jimbo
and Ned are on their TV show, Huntin’ and Killin’, explaining their new
workaround of Colorado’s latest hunting law, and a video shows Ned using a
flamethrower on deer! Napalm after the break, I’d watch this if it was a real
show.
Mr.
Garrison is teaching the class about the Vietnam War, he didn’t serve but
pretended he was at times. He tells Clyde anyone who fails the assignment on
asking a Vietnam vet has to repeat third grade, but that won’t be Stan, Kyle,
Cartman and Kenny, for Stan’s Uncle Jimbo served in the Vietnam War.
Stan
doesn’t care for the TV show and the Mexican Staring Frog of Southern Sri Lanka,
and Jimbo thinks Vietnam was fun… sure, I’d served my country if she needed me,
but I’d hardly consider war to be fun. THERE WERE NO FERRIS WHEELS IN VIETNAM
IN THE LATE 1960s!
We
get some real life footage from the war, and a flashback to when Jimbo and Ned
met in the war, this would put them in their late 40s or early 50s age wise.
This is where we find out about Ned’s missing arm, and the entire Viet Cong is
slaughtered (wait a second… Jimbo Kern,
if that’s the way it happened, then why did the communists still win the
Vietnam War?) Naturally, the boys are pleased, plus you need more than 12
viewers for an Emmy you know.
Personally,
I’d watch the hunting show over Jesus and Pals myself, which is now in a
ratings war. Bob Denver (from Gilligan’s Island, the titular Gilligan) comes
on, in a pathetic interview, back in class, Mr. Garrison is NOT impressed with
the boys’ report, and they get detention. Detention is supervised by Mr.
Mackey, I only had detention a few times in my final year of primary school, I
didn’t mind, as I was at my mentally lowest place of my life at the time. In detention, the
boys plot revenge….
Jimbo
and Ned have footage of… the Mexican Frog! Obviously staged, they fell for it!
The adults in South Park really are morons, but Jimbo and Ned’s show is getting
more popular! J&P, on the other hand, is turning into Jerry Springer,
complete with rednecks in the audience. And now, the frog is in action, but
Cartman, FROGS DON’T TALK! Watching these as an adult make me realise how much
of a prick Cartman is, and I sometimes scratch my head, thinking “Why do Stan
and Kyle put up with him?”
Jimbo
and Ned are fooled AGAIN… I didn’t pick up on their thickness back then that’s
for sure. Apparently war trauma comes in the form of the lack of desired rides
in base camp now. One more prank – the frog is out, and Jimbo uses a grenade,
which fails, Ned goes for a shotgun, but Ned is hurt… and has to go to
hospital. Ned is apparently Jimbo’s only friend, and then Stan confesses to
Jimbo the videos were fake. The J&P producer was overhearing though…
getting them on TV! All 6 (the boys plus Jimbo and Ned) are now telling their
stories. Cartman wants to throw chairs, and we return to… JERRY!!!!! JERRY!!!!
Oh wait, wrong show… I tried to watch Jerry Springer at my Mum’s house at this
time, when I could get away with it! Which wasn’t very often haha, I was trying
to be cool.
There’s
an important lesson here about lying at the end, sure, there’s been a few times
in my life where I’ve lied, but they tend to come back and bite you, that’s for
sure. The former producer? She’s in a fiery pit now…
