Season 1 Summary

South Park’s first season is already off to a hot start, with the town almost being destroyed 4 times, all four main characters being introduced, and its biting look at the world already in place.

Favourite 2 Episodes

  • Volcano – the insane speed in which you can dig a laval canal, the hunting antics, and of course Scuzzlebutt!
  • Pinkeye – Zombies? Worcestershire sauce? A plague? All works a charm.

Least Favourite 2 Episodes

  • Big Gay Al’s Big Gay Boat Ride – Still enjoyed it, just not as good as the others if you ask me.
  • An Elephant Makes Love To A Pig – Again, didn’t do it as much for me as the other episodes.

Notable Events

We meet Stan, Kyle, Cartman and Kenny.

Kenny dies 12 times.

South Park is almost destroyed FOUR times – a volcano, mutant Stan, a plague of turkeys and Mecha-Streisand. The people are almost wiped out by a zombie plague too.

Mr. Garrison starts his moronic lessons in class.

At The Time

Admittedly, watching the first 2 seasons of South Park was like forcing down medicine – I had never seen anything this vulgar in my life before (amongst other things, my favourite films at the time of late 2004, were the likes of Ernest Goes to Jail), so a fair bit of this season was a bit much for me, that is, the parts that didn’t go over my head. I enjoyed later seasons more than this one.

Comments Now

Now a 30 year old man, rewatching this season, I enjoy the timeless storylines – episodes like Death can work for any medium or time period, a similar episode in say 2007 would have been time-period specific. Something like Volcano or Weight Gain 4000 also works as a timeless episode, and aside from say the older TV sets in the episodes, could be set this year.

The message of Mr. Hankey the Christmas Poo, against political correctness, also rings truer in 2021, fortunately, Christmas displays are still very prominent in 2021 in my city of Australia, including nativity scenes and all.

And while crude in 1997, South Park (and other shows) would go on to be much much cruder after this.
